Food facilities are not obligated to accept customer-provided reusables although many are supportive of this practice and have implemented policies to accommodate it.
Allowing customers to bring containers for takeout is a big community service. When a food vendor allows it, we encourage you to bring your containers for takeout. It helps reduce the volume of single-use waste in our community.
Food facility requirements
The food facility must have written procedures for safely handling customer containers. Surfaces that touch these containers must be sanitized between customers and they must wash their hands after handling a customer container.
Acceptable customer containers
- Empty-no leftover foods or liquids
- Washed, dry, and free of residue
- Large enough to hold your order
- Suitable for the food you are ordering
