Preliminary construction inspection for permanent food facility

A preliminary construction inspection for your food facility is required when it is 90% complete. Learn what is needed to schedule the inspection.

Timing

  • Construction is 90% complete
  • At least 1 week before you want the inspection
  • At least 2 weeks before you plan to open

We receive numerous food facility plans and inspection requests. To ensure timely inspections, it's best to schedule them in advance, as your preferred date may not always be available.

Cost

Standard inspections are included in the plan review fee. However, if inspections exceed the allotted time, additional hourly fees may apply.

Requirements for scheduling a preliminary construction inspection

  • Hot and cold water, ventilation, and most finishes are installed
  • Most equipment is installed and matches the models shown in plans
  • Refrigeration on and holding at 41F or below
  • Most lighting installed

If the above requirements have been met, phone or email the inspector who approved your plans to schedule the inspection.

After the preliminary inspection

Following the inspection, we'll provide a detailed report outlining necessary corrections before the final inspection. The plan review inspector may also recommend additional preliminary inspections. If so, they will specify the timing for these inspections.

What if I changed or added equipment or made other changes to my EHS approved plans?

You need to submit your revised plans to Environmental Health Services right away. If you wait, your final inspection may get delayed. Review how to make changes to approved plans for a food facility for details.
