Safe drug disposal ordinance

For drug manufacturers.
manufactured drugs

What does the ordinance do?

The ordinance applies to manufacturers of medicines sold in Marin. It promotes the safe disposal of unwanted and expired medicines.

Our goals:

  • Reduce accidental poisonings
  • Control substance abuse
  • Protect the environment

Why does Marin County need a medicine collection program?

The immediate reason for safe and secure medicine disposal is public safety. There is clear evidence of harm to the environment when drugs are not disposed of properly. Flushing pharmaceuticals can lead to water pollution.

What medicines are covered by the ordinance?

  • Prescription and over-the-counter
  • Human and pet medicines

These are "covered drugs."  Vitamins or supplements, herbal-based and homeopathic medicines are not part of the ordinance.

Who is a producer?

Any drug manufacturer selling their product in Marin County.

Not producer

Pharmacists and other professionals who prepare compounded drugs as part of their practice are not producers under this ordinance.

What do producers have to do?

Each producer needs to participate in an approved stewardship plan.  These plans provide collection and disposal options.
