Project Description

The Golden Gate Village Revitalization Project is a comprehensive effort to rehabilitate and preserve the historic public housing community while improving the quality, safety, and long-term viability of the property. Led by the Marin Housing Authority and its development partner, Burbank Housing, the project seeks to address substantial deferred maintenance and infrastructure needs while preserving Golden Gate Village’s historic architectural and landscape character. The revitalization effort is intended to maintain and improve affordable housing for existing and future residents, enhance residential buildings and community spaces, and incorporate modern building systems and amenities while respecting the property's historic significance. Given Golden Gate Village’s importance to Marin City’s African American history and its designation in the National Register of Historic Places, the revitalization project also emphasizes preservation, community engagement, and the continued recognition of the site’s cultural and social legacy. The revitalization project is structured as a three-phase rehabilitation program intended to preserve the existing historic buildings while substantially improving housing conditions.
