Re: Support for Marin Water’s Five-Year Strategic Plan (2024-2028) and Marin-Sonoma Water Pipeline

Dear President Samson,

On behalf of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, we extend our strong support for the Marin Municipal Water District’s Five-Year Strategic Plan (2024-2028) and commend your Board’s foresight in approving the development of a new water pipeline between Marin and Sonoma Counties. These initiatives represent critical steps toward ensuring the long-term resilience and sustainability of our region’s water supply in the face of growing threats from climate change.

Water security is a fundamental issue for our communities, and this effort to connect Marin and Sonoma exemplifies the forward-thinking, cooperative approach needed to address the long-term challenges posed by drought, wildfires and sea level rise. As we experienced firsthand during the severe drought of 2020-2021, Marin’s water supply is vulnerable to increasingly unpredictable climate patterns. By connecting our regional water sources, we will not only enhance drought resiliency but also provide greater flexibility in managing our water supply.

We also commend your Board’s Five-Year Strategic Plan, which establishes clear objectives and actions on: Reliable Water Supply, Resilient Water System, Watershed Stewardship, Fiscal Responsibility, and Organizational Excellence. The plan’s management approach also reflects a commitment to progress and action.

We recognize the careful considerations and effort that went into these decisions and extend our partnership to ensure these long-term efforts are successful. We stand ready to support the implementation of both the strategic plan and the pipeline project. We all benefit from ensuring Marin residents continue to have a safe, sustainable, and resilient water supply.

Thank you again for your leadership and dedication to protecting and securing long-term resiliency for our community’s water resources.

Sincerely,

Mary Sackett, President
Marin County Board of Supervisors
