The Civilian Oversight Commission receives inquiries and comments from community members regarding the Marin County Sheriff’s Office

Introduction

The Civilian Oversight Commission receives inquiries and comments from community members regarding the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. The information below explains how to share your concerns, depending on the type of issue.

1. Complaints About Sheriff’s Office Personnel or Specific Incidents

If your concern involves a specific interaction with a deputy or other Sheriff’s Office employee, or if you have questions about how a prior complaint was handled, the formal process currently available is through the Sheriff’s Office.

To file or follow up on a complaint:

As established by County ordinance, the Civilian Oversight Commission, in collaboration with the Office of the Inspector General, once appointed, will develop an independent and accessible complaint process that will provide an additional option for submitting complaints related to the Sheriff’s Office. This process is currently under development and will be shared publicly on this website once it is established. Thank you for your patience.

2. Concerns About Sheriff’s Office Policies and Practices

If your concern relates to a policy, procedure, or practice of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, such as jail operations, federal immigration matters, RIPA data, or the use of specialized equipment, the Commission has a distinct role.

As outlined in County ordinance, the Commission, in collaboration with the Inspector General once appointed, will develop and carry out a process to actively and continually monitor and make recommendations regarding the Sheriff’s Office’s compliance with applicable policies, procedures, training, practices, and governing laws.

This work is currently being planned, and the County anticipates appointing the Inspector General in spring 2026. Information about this process will be shared publicly on the Commission’s website  when it becomes available. Thank you for your patience.
