About the County's current green building code

Current green building code

Updated green building code requirements went into effect January 1, 2026.

Requirements

  1. Remodels and additions of existing single-family residences (projects of 500 square feet or greater), will be required to meet a target energy score using a point system that allows for a flexible range of building energy efficiency and/or electrification measures.
  2. Additional electric vehicle infrastructure requirements including:
    1. For existing multi-family and nonresidential properties that modify their electrical panel, additional EV support infrastructure must be installed to support future EV charger installation.
  3. All projects pouring concrete within unincorporated Marin County must comply with concrete and cement composition standards that maintains adequate strength and durability while reducing embodied carbon emissions.
  4. While the County is no longer enforcing the requirement for all newly constructed buildings to go all-electric, we still strongly encourage you to consider the benefits of all-electric design including improved indoor air quality, elimination of expense of installing gas pipes, availability of financial incentives for all-electric appliances, and preparation for the potential discontinuation of gas appliances in the future.
