If you lost a check from the County of Marin — or it’s too old to cash — you can request a new one.
Before you start
When the county sends you a check, you have 6 months (from the date of issue) to cash it.
After 6 months, the bank won’t accept it anymore. The check is called “stale.”
Following the process on this page will help you get a replacement check.
What to do
If you lost the check
Step 1. Gather information you’ll need
- Vendor name
- Vendor ID or Tax ID
- Date of payment
- Amount of payment
- Check number
Step 2. Contact the Department of Finance
- Phone: 415-473-6156
Provide the information from step 1 and ask for a new check.
If the check is too old to deposit
If the date on the check is 6 months ago or longer, here’s what to do.
Step 1. Find the old check
Step 2. Write a letter explaining that you’re requesting a new check
Step 3. Mail the letter and the old check to us
County of Marin Department of Finance AP Division
3501 Civic Center Drive, Room 219
San Rafael, CA 94903
If you can’t find the old check, contact the department. Instead of giving us the old check, you can also make a sworn statement that the check was lost or destroyed. Then we can issue a new check.
What’s next?
We will process your request. Most of the time, we can send you a new check within 10 business days of when we get your request.
You can learn more about the process by reviewing Government Code Section 29802.
