Learn about the Marin County Investment Pool

The Marin County Investment Pool combines money from local agencies and invests it to earn interest while keeping funds safe & easy to access.

The County Board of Supervisors created this pool to invest County assets. Public agencies can also invest in the Pool. The Pool has received the highest rating, "AAAf/S1," from Fitch Ratings Inc. Fitch is a nationally recognized, independent credit rating agency. The "AAAf" rating means there's strong protection against credit losses from the Pool’s investments. The "S1" rating means:

  • The Pool has a low sensitivity to changing market conditions
  • The Pool has a low risk profile and conservative investment policies.

The Pool includes monies deposited by mandatory and voluntary participants. Mandatory participants include:

  • The County of Marin
  • K-12 school districts
  • Community college districts
  • Special districts

Some agencies are not required to invest in the Pool. These agencies do so only as an optional investment. These voluntary participants include cities and various special districts. The Treasurer encourages voluntary participants to use the Pool as a long-term investment vehicle.

The main objectives of the Investment Pool are to:

  • Preserve capital
  • Meet the liquidity needs of Pool participants
  • Achieve an investment return within the guidelines of the Investment Policy.

The management of the Pool follows statutory provisions outlined in the California Government Code.
