What we do
We work to prevent damage from fires. We do this by:
- Enforcing fire codes and fire prevention standards;
- Managing the Residential Wildfire Hazard Reduction and Business Inspection programs;
- Conducting fire investigations;
- Hosting fire and life safety programs;
- Reviewing land development and building plans and issuing fire permits.

- Create a defensible space on your property Every homeowner must maintain a 100 foot defensible space around their home.
- Apply for a Fire Department permit The Fire Department issues permits for projects like installing sprinkler or fire alarm systems.
- Learn about the Wildland Urban Interface The Wildland Urban Interface shows areas where homes and buildings are close to wildland and open spaces.
- Learn about AB-38 inspections If you are selling a property in a High or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, you have to get an AB-38 inspection.
- Safety resources for residents These articles and fliers can help you prepare for emergencies.
- Marin County Strategic Fire Plan & Community Wildfire Protection Plan This is a plan the Marin County Fire Department creates each year. This plan is part of pre-fire management.
- Standards and ordinances These fire safety standards are for building, renovating, and working in residential areas.
- Fire Hazard Severity Zone: Local Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Maps identify areas in the State as Moderate, High and Very High Severity Zones based on consistent statewide criteria and the severity of fire hazard that is expected to prevail in those areas.
