Fire Hazard Severity Zone: Local Responsibility Area

Local jurisdictions are required to review and adopt the updated maps, ensuring communities are better prepared for wildfire threats.

Summary

Fire Hazard Severity Maps identify areas in the State as Moderate, High and Very High Severity Zones based on consistent statewide criteria and the severity of fire hazard that is expected to prevail in those areas. The maps assess hazard, not risk. Hazard refers to the natural conditions that contribute to wildfire potential, such as vegetation, terrain, and climate.

The Local Responsibility Area (LRA) refers to areas where wildfire protection is managed by local governments, rather than state or federal agencies. If you live in an LRA, your city or county fire department is responsible for wildfire response and preparedness efforts.

These updated maps help communities and homeowners better understand wildfire hazards in their area, guiding important decisions about defensible space, home hardening, and preparedness measures.
