Standards
The Fire Prevention Division establishes standards and ordinances to enhance community safety by:
- Reducing the risk of fires;
- Ensuring proper building design;
- Guiding safe practices for residents and business.
These standards help enforce fire codes and protect lives, property, and the environment.

- Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) Standard (0.23 MB) — This 7-page document describes the standards and requirements for storing liquified petroleum gas (LPG) and installing LPG storage tanks.
- Vegetation Management Plan Standards (0.44 MB) — This 4-page document describes the standards for vegetation management plans (VMP). It includes definitions of common terms.
- Vegetation Management Plan Example (0.20 MB) — This 4-page document provides an example of what you should include in your VMP. It describes the requirements for each zone of defensible space.

- Marin County Fire Department Residential Sprinkler Standard 2023 (0.49 MB) — This 4-page document describes the standards and requirements for designing fire sprinkler systems.
Wildland Urban Interface Standards
These standards are for homeowners and contractors remodeling houses in a Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) area. CAL FIRE sets additional standards for building in a WUI area. Read more about allowable building materials at CAL FIRE.
