Before you start
Marin County Fire only issues burn permits for properties in Marin County Fire jurisdiction. If you live in a city or fire district, please check with your local fire authority for permit requirements and regulations. If you are not sure you fall within our jurisdiction, please call our reception desk at 415-473-6717.
You cannot burn residential yard waste such as leaves, grass, landscape debris, or garden trimmings. Burning residential yard waste is prohibited.
Before any burn, you need an approved Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Regulation 5 Notification Form, a signed Marin County Fire permit, check that it is a burn day, and notify the Emergency Command Center.
What to do
You must submit a BAAQMD Regulation 5 Notification Form and pay the notification fee to the Air District before burning. The required fee is $199.00 to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District. Once obtained, the permit is valid for up to one year.
Fill out and submit the Marin County Fire application form. After we receive your submission, our staff will contact you to finalize the application. We will conduct a site visit to see your burn piles, and you'll get a confirmation when we approve your permit. Do not burn until your application is approved and signed.
What's next - Day of Burn
Make sure you know how to burn safely. Before any burn, you must make sure that burning is allowed that day. Check the open burn status on the Bay Area Air Quality Management District and for a complete list of regulations.
If it is a burn day, you must then contact the Emergency Command Center to inform them of your burn. The phone number is on the approved permit.
To make sure your burn is safe:
- Only burn dry, natural vegetative material;
- Do not burn any trash, painted wood or other debris;
- Do not burn on windy days;
- Have appropriate tools and a water source nearby;
- An adult is required to tend the fire at all times.
