Internship Program

Learn more about the Marin County Public Defender's internship program
Interns of the Marin County Public Defender internship program.

What is the internship program?

The Marin County Public Defender’s Office hosts a year-round internship program (Fall, Winter/Spring, or Summer sessions) which begins with a training and orientation and involves regular trainings and supervision throughout the internship period. Interns of all levels will be given meaningful and responsible work and are expected to maintain a high level of professionalism during their internship. The office of the Public Defender is a confidential legal environment and participants will abide by the county’s oath of confidentiality. Interns are unpaid and will receive a small travel stipend. Intern applicants who can secure alternate funding (through their educational institutions or grant programs) will be supported by the Public Defender’s Office to maintain that funding.

What kind of experience do interns gain?

College interns, law school interns and post bar clerks will work closely with attorneys in the preparation of cases, observations of court proceedings and engage in legal investigation assistance as needed. Law students/post bars will interview clients, visit crime scenes, conduct legal research and writing and make court appearances if they are certified by the State Bar. Law students/post bars who are not certified will assist attorneys in court but will not be able to represent a client on the record. College interns will review evidence and work on office-wide projects as well as be members of larger case teams.

Who can apply to join the program?

Law school graduates (post-bars), current law students, and college students who are in their final year of study who are dedicated to criminal justice fields of study.

How do I apply?

Please send an email with your cover letter and resume to Gina Vanni or Patricia Castillo to apply. Applications submitted well in advance of the desired internship session are more likely to be successful.
