Lanterman Petris Short (LPS) Conservatorship

Information about conservatorship services in the Public Defender's Office

The County of Marin wants to put me on an LPS conservatorship

What is a Conservatorship?

A conservatorship is a court proceeding in which a judge appoints a family member, friend, or other responsible person to care for another adult who cannot care for themselves and/or their finances.

What Happens?

The Office of the Public Defender is automatically appointed by the court to represent people that are the subject of an LPS petition for conservatorship.

What Next?

Once a petition is filed asking a court to appoint the County Public Guardian as your conservator, you have the right to request a court or jury trial to oppose the conservatorship. Your court-appointed public defender will meet with you and discuss the legal process and your specific rights at trial.  If you are put on conservatorship, our office will continue to represent you during its duration.
