Body of News Release

Marin County, CA – The County of Marin’s successful Clean Slate Program, a road show that brings an array of services directly to residents in their own neighborhoods, is headed to Marin City on Thursday, February 26.

The pop-up event is set for 4-6:30 PM in the parking lot of Saint Andrew Presbyterian Church, 101 Donahue Street.

Over the past four years, the late-afternoon walk-up events have led to hundreds of productive and positive interactions between residents and staff members from several County departments.

The original idea behind the Clean Slate events – orchestrated with Black History Month in mind – was to give individuals previously involved in the justice system a way to seal or expunge their criminal records. Expungement gives a fresh start to those who have completed their sentences and remained crime-free.

People seeking to clear one’s record, terminate one’s probation, or dismiss a conviction will be able to walk up with documentation and speak directly to a representative from the Public Defender’s Office, the District Attorney’s Office, or the Probation Department.

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will be on hand for assistance with public benefits such as Medi-Cal, CalFresh food assistance, CalWORKS services, employment training, and general financial relief for families. The Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) will also be available to assist custodial and noncustodial persons who have questions about an existing case, modifying an order, or establishing parentage or child support.

Those seeking law-related help are asked to bring all relevant documents with them, including past correspondences and state Department of Justice records. Each participating department will have Spanish translators on hand to help with health or immigration-related relief.

The Clean Slate partnership is not just about services through the Civic Center. In the past, it has included nonprofit assistance from Canal Alliance, Legal Aid of Marin, CenterPoint, Helen Vine Recovery Center, the Marin City Community Development Workforce and Career Development, and others. In the big picture, the collaborative series helps remove barriers to self-sufficiency and ensures that every resident can succeed.

For questions about the event related to legal services, contact the Public Defender’s Office at (473) 473-6321. For questions about health services, contact HHS at (415) 473-3350.
