Body of News Release
San Rafael, CA — Several major roadway improvements along the Point San Pedro Road corridor in eastern San Rafael are set for this year, with construction occurring at several locations along the corridor to enhance safety for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.
The work being coordinated by Marin County Department of Public Works and City of San Rafael includes pedestrian safety upgrades, roadway stabilization, and pavement treatments designed to maintain and enhance one of East San Rafael’s key transportation corridors.
Construction activity will occur along Point San Pedro Road as projects move forward. Drivers traveling along Point San Pedro Road and nearby areas may experience temporary traffic delays, lane closures, and construction activity during work hours as projects progress over the next several months, with work expected to continue into the fall. The County and the City of San Rafael invite the community to join an open house on Friday, April 17, from 5-6:30 PM at San Pedro Elementary School Multipurpose Room (498 Point San Pedro Road, San Rafael) regarding the road improvements.
“Point San Pedro Road is relied on every day by residents, students, and park visitors,” said Supervisor Mary Sackett, whose district includes the corridor. “These improvements will enhance roadway safety and support the reliability as a transportation corridor for years to come.”
Planned Improvements in 2026
The corridor projects include:
- HAWK Pedestrian Signal Installation at Summit Avenue – Point San Pedro Road at Summit Avenue: A High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal will increase awareness and reinforce the need to slow and stop for pedestrians when activated. - Pavement Preservation – From San Rafael High School to east of Biscayne Drive in unincorporated area: In coordination with the City of San Rafael, crews will repair potholes and areas of damaged roadway before applying a protective asphalt overlay, creating a smoother, more durable surface and extending the service life of the road. The project also includes safety enhancements such as improved lane striping and bicycle markings. (anticipated June – October 2026)
- Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) Installation – Knight Drive, Peacock Drive, and Riviera Drive intersections in unincorporated Marin will have installations of pedestrian-activated flashing lights at the three marked crosswalks to increase driver awareness and yielding.
