Marin County, CA – The San Rafael-based Marin History Museum will receive $100,000 in support annually for three years following an agreement between the County of Marin and the museum’s board. Marin County Board of Supervisors approved the agreement during its October 14 session.
County staff recommended Board support of the agreement because of the museum’s alignment with countywide goals of advancing race equity, engaging youth, and furthering public education about Marin’s past. The agreement is part of a larger collaboration with the City of San Rafael to steward the history and make it accessible to Marin County residents.
“The museum plays a vital role in preserving Marin’s cultural and historical resources while supporting community vitality and providing educational opportunities for youth,” said County Budget Director Josh Swedberg. “We recognize this substantial need and its benefits to the community. This funding will help assure that its exhibits continue to create inclusive access to historical records and advance race equity, which is one of our Board’s top priorities.”
Swedberg said the funds come from one-time nondepartmental allocations within the 2025-26 fiscal year budget. Since the 2020-21 fiscal year, the County has contributed $20,000 to $30,000 per year to support the museum’s archival storage feeds, exhibit curation, and executive recruitment.
In addition, the museum is working with County staff from the Department of Cultural Services and the Marin County Free Library to create displays in the Marin County Civic Center and other library branches. The museum already manages exhibits at San Rafael City Hall in cooperation with city staff.
Founded in 1935, the museum is based at the historical Boyd Gate House at 1125 B Street in San Rafael. It is open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 AM to 3 PM.
