Body of News Release

San Rafael, CAAt today’s Board of Supervisors meeting, labor agreements with the Deputy Sheriffs Association and the Deputy District Attorney Unit – Teamsters Local 856 were presented. In addition, the County has also reached tentative agreements with the Sheriff Staff Officers Association, IATSE Local 16, the Probation Managers Association, and the Marin County Management Employees’ Association, which will be scheduled for future Board review.

The County is currently in active negotiations with all employee groups. Members of the community and County employees can find more information about specific negotiations on the Labor Unions and Associations page.  The County looks forward to continuing negotiations with our labor partners and anticipates reaching additional agreements in the coming weeks. The staff report and Board agenda for this item are now available online

“From day one, we have approached every step of this process with the respect and seriousness it deserves,” said County Executive Derek Johnson. “Some job classifications have fallen behind in the market, and through these contracts we can maintain equity and position ourselves well in the labor market in the years to come.  The bottom line is that we need to make sure that the County can both afford agreed upon salary market adjustments and that they enable the County to attract a qualified workforce.”

The County's vision and goal throughout this process is to obtain financially sustainable contracts with all employee groups to ensure the County remains an employer of choice in the region by offering fair compensation, competitive benefits, and a workplace where employees feel supported and valued.

While terms are subject to formal Board approval, the agreements reflect:

  • Cost of living adjustments to maintain competitive compensation, with up to an 11% increase in salaries over the three-year term.
  • Compensation alignment with comparative labor markets.
  • Continued or expanded support for quality healthcare.
  • Enhancements to employee benefits required to retain our highly qualified workforce.

“These agreements reflect a thoughtful balance—supporting our employees while maintaining long-term financial stability for the County,” said Johnson. “We are encouraged by the progress so far and grateful for the collaborative spirit shown by our labor partners who have been highly engaged and willing to work toward common ground.”

The County has ten employee labor groups that represent the majority of its workforce of approximately over 2,000 active employees.  Good faith negotiations continue with the balance of the County’s labor partners and additional tentative agreements are anticipated for adoption at the July 8th and July 15th Board of Supervisor meetings.
