Marin County, CA – A full slate of educational events is offered this September, as part of National Preparedness Month, to help prepare the community for natural disasters and strengthen resilience before, during and after major emergencies.

Countywide efforts led by the Office of Emergency Management's ReadyMarin program, focus on meeting the community where they are. This ensures everyone living and working in Marin, especially the most at-risk communities, can access resources and participate in emergency preparedness trainings.

Throughout September, free 90-minute preparedness classes will be offered in locations across the county in English and Spanish. Designed for busy schedules, these short sessions cover the essentials: creating a family plan, building a go-bag, and staying informed during emergencies. Classes also include hands-only CPR training and instruction on fire extinguisher use. Each participant will receive a free go-bag, but space is limited. Sign up at ReadyMarin.org.

The County is also partnering with local agencies to support community preparedness through a variety of upcoming events, including:

To date, efforts have already resulted in the distribution of more than 350 go-bags at community events and 100 emergency kits provided to the unhoused community members through a partnership with the County of Marin’s Health and Human Services Department.

Natural disasters often have the greatest impact on underserved groups such as older adults, low-income households, and unhoused community members. As climate change brings more frequent and severe events — including floods, wildfires, and droughts — preparedness is more important than ever.

Can’t make it to an in-person event? You can start preparing today from home. Don't wait for a disaster to strike; make plans to protect yourself and your loved ones. Here are some easy steps to get started:

  • Sign up to receive emergency alerts at Emergency.MarinCounty.gov.
  • Make a plan with friends and family about communication before, during and after a disaster.
  • Gather emergency kits (go-bags and stay boxes) with enough supplies to last several days for everyone in the household.

With the wildfires across the state as stark reminders, those who live or work in Marin are encouraged to take advantage of practical tools and strengthen their readiness throughout National Disaster Preparedness Month.

By taking these actions, community members can lessen the impact of disasters on everyone. Visit ReadyMarin.org for tips, resources and checklists to get the family ready.
