SAN ANSELMO, CA — The Town of San Anselmo and the Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District announced today that the fenced off Building Bridge 2(BB2)/Creek Park Plaza area will not open in time for the start of the Town’s annual Live on the Avenue event series, which begins Saturday, June 20.

The Town had hoped to make the plaza area available for community use this summer as part of its broader Creek Park and downtown revitalization efforts. However, a structural engineering evaluation of the BB2 substructure determined that repairs and reinforcement will be needed before the space can safely be opened to the public.

Public safety is the top priority for both the Town and the Flood District. The plaza area will remain closed until the necessary work is completed and the Town can confirm that the space is safe for community use.

“We know this news will be disappointing to many residents, businesses, and others who have been looking forward to seeing this space reopen after being closed for so long,” said San Anselmo Mayor Steve Burdo. “We were hopeful that Creek Park Plaza would be ready in time for this summer’s Live on the Avenue season, but when the engineering assessment identified structural issues that must be addressed, we had a responsibility to put public safety first. While this means a delay, it also means we are taking the necessary steps to ensure this becomes a safe, vibrant community gathering place for years to come, and we remain committed to reopening the plaza as soon as possible and delivering on the community’s vision for a revitalized Creek Park and downtown San Anselmo.”

The Town previously entered into a lease with the Flood Control District to allow public use of the BB2/Creek Park Plaza area for community gathering, outdoor dining, recreation and downtown activities. Following execution of the lease, the Town retained a structural engineering consultant to conduct an assessment of the plaza and its underlying support structure and evaluate their condition.

That review found that work is necessary to reinforce and repair portions of the structure before public use can begin. The Flood Control District is anticipated to support the repairs needed related to the structural integrity of the substructure and related site conditions.

“This is an important public space in the heart of downtown San Anselmo, and we remain committed to working with the County to prepare it for safe use as part of the Town’s broader vision for Creek Park and downtown vitality,” Town Manager, David Donery said.

Live on the Avenue will continue as planned on Friday and Saturday evenings beginning June 20, and running through September 11, but the Creek Park Plaza/BB2 plaza area will remain fenced off and not be available for public use during the early part of the event series. The Town will provide additional information as the repair scope, schedule and next steps are confirmed.

The Town and District expect to provide a more detailed update in advance of the upcoming Flood Zone 9 Advisory Board meeting scheduled for June 25, 2026.
