Body of News Release
Marin County, CA – Monday, May 4, is a milestone day for the June 2 Statewide Direct Primary Election. It’s the date when the Marin County Elections Department starts to mail ballots to all local registered voters and opens in-person voting at its Marin County Civic Center office in San Rafael.
All active registered California voters are mailed ballots starting 29 days before every election. The mailings will roll out over four or five days. Registered voters receive a postage-paid envelope along with their ballot cards and must remember to sign the envelope before mailing it back. Also, the ballot envelope must be postmarked on or before Election Day and be received within seven days or it won’t count.
“Please consider voting early this election. When you vote early, your vote is included in the Election Night results. Of course, you can vote at any time before the polls close, but the later our staff receives your mailed ballot, the more likely it is that your vote will be counted after Election Day.”
Whichever way a voter prefers to vote, make a plan and review the options:
- Mail your voted ballot to the Elections Department using the postage-paid return envelope.
- Place the envelope with your voted ballot in an official drop box.
- Vote in person at the Civic Center or at any Marin County vote center.
Drop boxes will be available May 5 through June 2 at 18 locations throughout the county, including the Marin County Civic Center’s South Arch (on Peter Behr Drive, up the driveway from the post office) and the North Arch (on Vera Schulz Drive, across from Lagoon Park). An additional drop box will be available inside the Middle Arch lobby weekdays from 8 AM to 5 PM plus weekends from 9 AM to 5 PM beginning May 22 through Election Day.
In addition to the Elections Department (Suite 121 of the Civic Center), which opens for early voting starting May 4, 19 other vote centers will be open on staggered dates starting May 23. Voters may visit any vote center for in-person services, including requesting a replacement ballot.
Find a vote center near you. Locations and hours of operation for vote centers and official ballot drop boxes are listed in the Voter Information Guide that was recently mailed to all registered voters.
Vote centers opening on May 23 are in Marin City, Novato (United Methodist Church), and San Geronimo.
Vote centers opening on May 30 are in Bolinas, Fairfax, Kentfield, Larkspur, Mill Valley, Novato (City Hall, Novato Unified School District office, Nativity of Christ Greek Orthodox Church), Point Reyes Station, San Anselmo, San Rafael (Dominican University’ Canoles Hall, Marin Health and Wellness Center).
An additional vote center will be open on Election Day, June 2, at the Albert J. Boro Community Center in the Canal neighborhood of San Rafael.
Those planning to participate in the election should be aware of these additional important dates:
- May 18: The last day to register to vote in this election.
- May 19: Conditional Voter Registration and same-day voting begins at the Elections Department.
- May 23- June 2: Same-day registration and in person voting available at vote centers
- May 26: Last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot be mailed (voters can still pick up a ballot in person at any vote center in Marin).
- June 2: Election Day is the last day to vote in-person or return a ballot by 8 PM. Vote centers are open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked no later than June 2. If mailing a ballot on or near Election Day, get a hand-stamped postmark from a postal employee inside a United States Post Office. Unofficial results will be posted shortly after 8 PM on MarinVotes.org as well as the State of California Secretary of State website.
Voters who forget to sign their ballot envelope or whose signature does not compare to their registration record will be contacted with instructions on how to correct the issue so their ballot can be counted.
Voters can also sign up for BallotTrax at WheresMyBallot.com to track their vote-by-mail ballot and receive notifications when it is mailed to them and received by the Elections Department.
