San Rafael, CA – The organization that monitors and scores governmental accounting and financial reporting nationwide thinks quite highly of the Marin County Department of Finance.

The department received the highest form of recognition by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) last week when it presented the latest honor for the County’s 2023 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. The report earned the Department of Finance (DOF) a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional organization headquartered in Chicago and Washington, D.C. Its Certification of Achievement for Excellence recognizes financial reporting that embodies a “spirit of full disclosure,” which means it meets the organization’s highest standards in accuracy, clarity and transparency.

Marin County DOF Director Mina Martinovich received notification of the award on September 18.

“Receiving this award is more than just an honor; it’s a tangible measure of our County’s commitment to good governance and financial stewardship,” Martinovich said. “This recognition demonstrates our dedication to providing clear, accessible financial information for the benefit of residents and stakeholders alike. It helps foster trust and confidence in how public funds are handled, supporting our ability to deliver essential services effectively across the community.”

California law requires that every local government publish a complete set of financial statements that are reviewed by an independent auditor. The report, which was 276 pages for the 2022-2023 version, represents the culmination of all budgeting and accounting activities engaged in by management during the fiscal year.

The GFOA represents public finance officials in the U.S. and Canada, and boasts more than 17,800 members of federal, state/provincial, and local finance officials between the two countries.
