Body of News Release

San Rafael, CA – The 14th annual Marin County Sidewalk CPR event, sponsored by Marin County Health and Human Services and the Marin Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency, returns on Saturday, August 17, from 10 AM to 2 PM. The annual countywide event provides an opportunity for people of all ages to learn critical lifesaving skills in 15 minutes or less.

During the trainings, participants will learn how to:

  • perform hands-only CPR;
  • operate an automated external defibrillator (AED);
  • administer Narcan nasal spray to reverse an overdose, and;
  • control bleeding when someone is injured.

The free trainings will take place at 13 locations throughout Marin County.

Individuals with these skills have the potential to make all the difference between life and death in emergency situations, when every second counts. According to a recent study by the Marin County EMS Agency, nearly 90% of the almost 200 Marin County residents who experienced cardiac arrests away from a medical facility last year did not survive. Swift action is essential in such cases, as survival rates heavily rely on bystanders quickly initiating resuscitation and calling 911. Bystander CPR, particularly when administered immediately after cardiac arrest, has proven to increase the chance of survival by 60%.

Free Sidewalk CPR trainings will take place at the following locations on August 17 from 10 AM to 2 PM:

  • Corte Madera: Town Center, near Blue Barn
  • New! Fairfax: Fire Station 21
  • Greenbrae: Bon Air Shopping, near Mollie Stone's Market
  • Larkspur: Marin Country Mart farmers market
  • Mill Valley: The Depot Café & Bookstore
  • Marin City: Target
  • Muir Beach: Beach parking lot
  • Novato: Vintage Oaks Shopping, near Costco
  • Point Reyes Station: Toby’s Feed Barn
  • San Rafael: Montecito Plaza, near Trader Joe's (Training also in Spanish)
  • Sausalito: Ferry Terminal
  • Stinson Beach: Village Green
  • Tiburon: Ferry Terminal

We encourage everyone to stop by with your friends and family on Saturday, August 17 and help spread the word on social media using #MarinSidewalkCPR. Help turn Marin into a community of lifesavers.

“Medical emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere,” said Marin EMS Administrator Chris Le Baudour. “These CPR trainings aim to equip our community with the skills needed to help save a life. I thank our many partners for working with us to offer these critical lifesaving skills trainings for people of all ages in Marin County.”

In addition to Marin HHS and the Marin EMS Agency, Sidewalk CPR training is provided by staff from the following partners: Marin County Medical Reserve Corps,  OD Free Marin, Sutter Novato Community Hospital, MarinHealth Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente and all of the fire departments throughout the county.
