Body of News Release

San Rafael, CA While the government is no longer purchasing COVID-19 vaccines, there are still options for adults to receive the updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccine. Fortunately, having health insurance, including Medi-Cal, ensures access to low-cost or free vaccinations and preventive care.

The County of Marin’s Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is committed to reducing health disparities by enrolling residents in Medi-Cal, including immigrants with limited resources. Marin Public Health has also partnered with Safeway to host pop-up vaccination clinics this fall.

During the pandemic, Marin County led the Bay Area in vaccination rates.  “While we are in a better place now, vaccines remain vital; that’s why we are hosting vaccination clinics,” said Dr. Lisa Santora, Marin County’s Public Health Officer. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of these opportunities to protect themselves and their loved ones."

Expanded Medi-Cal Enrollment for Greater Access

This year, California expanded Medi-Cal to make health insurance more accessible to low-income individuals and families, regardless of immigration status. Marin HHS’ Division of Social Services is working to increase Medi-Cal enrollment, particularly among immigrants and underserved populations.

Residents can apply for Medi-Cal by visiting MarinHHS.org/Medi-Cal, calling (877) 410-8817, or visiting office locations at 120 North Redwood Drive, San Rafael; 1 6th Street, Point Reyes Station; or 3240 Kerner Boulevard, San Rafael. Residents are encouraged to use the BenefitsCal platform for faster renewals and can find local assistance on the state’s Department of Health Care Services website.

“Medi-Cal is an important tool to keep Marin healthy,” said D’Angelo Paillet, Marin HHS Social Services division director. “Nearly 20% of Marin County residents are enrolled in Medi-Cal, which ensures access to health care services, including preventive care services like vaccines.”

Updated Vaccine Details

  • The 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and older, to be administered at least two months after the last vaccine.
  • Annual flu vaccines are recommended for all individuals 6 months and older.
  • Immunizations for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are recommended for adults aged 75 and older and adults aged 60-74 at higher risk for severe disease. If you have already gotten an RSV vaccine, you do not need to get another one at this time.
  • RSV immunizations are also recommended to protect infants, either by a maternal RSV vaccine or an RSV antibody given to the baby.
  • The pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for adults 65 years or older. It is also recommended for children under 5 years old, and for children and adults who have an increased risk of pneumococcal disease.

Where to Get Vaccinated

Residents can receive vaccines from their health care provider or at local pharmacies. Most vaccines are covered by insurance. The California Bridge Access Program provides free vaccines for individuals aged 19 years and older who are uninsured or with insurance that does not cover vaccines (underinsured). Children and teens through age 18 years with Medi-Cal, who are uninsured or underinsured can receive free vaccines through the Vaccines for Children Program.
