Body of News Release

Marin County, CA – Planning to celebrate the Fourth of July? Marin County Fire Department is reminding residents and visitors to celebrate safely by leaving fireworks to the professionals, enjoying one of the region's permitted fireworks displays, and traveling early if you are heading to viewing areas for the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge fireworks because of expected severe traffic congestion and road closures.

Fireworks are illegal throughout Marin County, including those marketed as "Safe and Sane." The prohibition is in effect year-round and helps reduce the risk of devastating wildfires, injuries, and structure fires.

Residents and visitors can still enjoy a festive Independence Day by attending one of the area's professional fireworks displays:

Those planning to watch the San Francisco fireworks from Marin County should expect significant traffic delays. Extremely heavy traffic, limited parking, and temporary road closures are expected before and after the fireworks event, making access difficult. Officials are advising travelers to avoid the area completely or use public transit.

Because the Golden Gate Bridge closure requires a phased and coordinated traffic control process, Caltrans will begin intermittent closures of Highway 101 between 6 PM and 8 PM, with a full shutdown anticipated to be in effect by 9 PM. In Marin, southbound 101 traffic will be turned around at Spencer Avenue in Sausalito. Gradual reopening of 101 will begin gradually at approximately 10 PM.

Those heading into San Francisco from the North Bay should plan on using the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and the Bay Bridge.

Visitors to National Park Service lands should also remember that fireworks, drones, and glass containers are prohibited within parklands and on Golden Gate beaches. Please follow all posted closures, traffic controls, and directions from park staff and law enforcement.

Wildfire Risk

Marin County remains at risk for wildfire throughout the summer, and illegal fireworks pose a serious threat to neighborhoods, open space, and natural resources. Every year, fireworks cause preventable injuries, residential fires, and wildfires across California. Even a single spark can ignite dry vegetation and quickly become a dangerous wildfire.

Officials will enforce the County's fireworks ordinance throughout the holiday weekend with a zero-tolerance approach to illegal fireworks. Enforcement may occur whether fireworks are used on private or public property.

To report illegal fireworks, call the Marin County Sheriff's Office non-emergency line at (415) 473-2311.

Possessing or using illegal fireworks in Marin County may result in fines beginning at $410, including penalty assessments and surcharges.

Fireworks are not the only holiday fire hazard. Embers from barbecues, fire pits, and bonfires can also ignite dry vegetation. Residents are encouraged to use extra caution with any outdoor cooking or open flames and to ensure all fires are completely extinguished before leaving the area.

Water Safety

The Fourth of July weekend also brings large crowds to Marin's beaches, pools, lakes, and shorelines. Drowning remains one of the leading causes of injury and death for children ages 1 to 4.

Parents and caregivers should designate a responsible adult to provide constant, undistracted supervision whenever children are near water. Avoid distractions such as phones or alcohol while supervising and make sure properly fitted life jackets are available when appropriate.
