Body of News Release

Marin County, CA – This May Mental Health Month, the  Marin County Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Behavioral Health and Recovery Services (BHRS) division and community partners are hosting a series of free public events to promote mental health awareness, reduce stigma, and foster hope and resilience.

The events highlight not only the struggles of those living with mental health challenges, but also the emotional toll faced by caregivers, first responders, and service providers. Marin County’s Board of Supervisors formally recognized May as Mental Health Month at its April 22 meeting.

“Caring for others can take a real toll on mental health. But resilience, healing, and hope grow stronger when we come together,” said Dr. Todd Schirmer, BHRS Director. “This May, we invite the community to connect, support one another, and help change lives.”

Despite Marin’s high health rankings, the community continues to see elevated rates of suicide, substance use treatment, and mental health medication use compared to the state average — underscoring the need for action. Statewide, mental health conditions affect 1 in 3 children and 1 in 6 adults, with 4% of adults experiencing severe mental illness.
