Body of News Release

San Rafael, CA – Members of the public are invited to an open house community event on Tuesday, October 15, from 5:30–7:30 PM to learn more about plans for a multifamily affordable housing project on the site of a former shopping center in Marinwood.

The drop-in event will be hosted by the Marin County Community Development Agency (CDA) staff. CDA and the Board of Supervisors work on behalf of Marin residents to seek new affordable housing solutions amid a critical workforce housing shortage. Marin has one of the highest median housing prices and average cost of living in the nation.

The Marinwood Plaza proposal involves building four three-story residential buildings, at a maximum height of 40 feet. One of the buildings will include a 1,040 square foot ground-floor commercial space designated as a cafe. The plans include the preservation of the plaza’s existing grocery store, Marinwood Market.

In July, CDA received the project plans from Marinwood Propco, L.P., in agreement with Tableau Development Co. The proposal shows 125 affordable homes including one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom apartments. The units, constructed by Impact Residential Development and Pacific Housing, would be available to households earning between 30% to 70% of the area median income, which translates to a range of $52,890 and $123,410 for a family of three. Local jobs that could fit into those categories are a para educator at the Marin County Office of Education, a teacher at Miller Creek Middle School, or a Marin County Sheriff dispatcher.

The event will take place in the office of the Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority (MWPA), 1600 Los Gamos Drive, Room 335, in San Rafael. Visitors are advised to drive past the building and turn left into the main east-side parking lot. Follow orange signs to the main parking lot, and enter the building at Lobby A. Take the elevator to the MWPA Board Room on the third floor.
