Marin County, CA – The application deadline is 5 PM Friday, July 31, for candidates interested in serving on the Marin County Assessment Appeals Boards.
Appointed by the Marin County Board of Supervisors, Assessment Appeals Board members hear appeals from property owners regarding assessed property values determined by the County Assessor’s Office. The Assessment Appeals Board is a state-mandated body, and in recent years the caseload has required two hearings approximately every four weeks.
Marin County has two Assessment Appeals Boards, each composed of three members. Appeals are heard alternately by the two boards and may require additional meetings depending on caseload. Meeting dates vary, with sessions generally held on Thursdays or Fridays. Board members receive a stipend for each meeting attended.
Candidates must have at least five years of professional experience in California in one of the following categories:
- Certified public accountant or public accountant;
- Licensed real estate broker;
- Attorney;
- Property appraiser accredited by a nationally recognized professional organization; or
- Property appraiser certified by the Office of Real Estate Appraisers or by the State Board of Equalization.
Applicants must include documentation of qualifying experience with their application to the Clerk of the Board. Employees of an assessor’s office within the past three years are not eligible to serve.
