February 24, 2026 UPDATE: The Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the proposal to enter into a lease agreement with the Town of San Anselmo.

San Anselmo, CA — The Town of San Anselmo and the Marin County Flood Control and Water Conservation District are proposing to enter into a lease agreement allowing the Town to use the Building Bridge 2 (BB2) platform once again as a limited, carefully managed community gathering space.

The agreement, scheduled for the February 24 meetings of both the Board of Supervisors and the San Anselmo Town Council, represents a collaborative step to restore an important piece of downtown San Anselmo’s civic life while maintaining a strong focus on public safety.

The Town has retained a licensed structural engineering consultant to evaluate the platform’s integrity. Public use may resume only after the consultant confirms that the structure can safely accommodate the Town’s intended use. In addition, the Flood Control District and the Town have monitored the structure in recent years and no movement has been identified. The structure will continue to be monitored throughout the terms of the lease.

“This is about bringing people back together in a place that has long been part of San Anselmo’s identity,” said District 2 Supervisor Brian Colbert. “By allowing community use, we’re supporting downtown vitality while continuing to respect the engineering realities and regulatory processes that surround BB2.”

“After years of closure, we’re thrilled to partner with the County of Marin to reopen this beloved gathering place and return it to the people it was meant to serve,” said San Anselmo Mayor Steve Burdo. “As we reopen the plaza, we’re not just opening a gate – we are restoring connection, strengthening community bonds, and creating opportunities for residents to come together, create memories and celebrate San Anselmo.”

The lease does not change or predetermine any future District flood-control decisions related to BB2. The Flood Control District continues to work through FEMA’s regulatory requirements and ongoing discussions with downstream property owners related to potential future actions.

Marin County Public Works Director Christopher Blunk acknowledged the complexity of the broader process. “We know this has been a challenging issue for the community,” Blunk said. “This agreement reflects our commitment to partnership, transparency, and public safety as we continue long-term planning.”
