San Rafael, CA – National Voter Registration Day is Tuesday, September 17, and the Marin County Civic Center is hosting a party.
The Marin County Elections Department, the League of Women Voters of Marin County, and Canal Alliance will be outside the Civic Center from 11 AM to 2 PM Tuesday to encourage residents to check their voter status. Visitors are invited to stop at either the South Archway (Peter Behr Drive) or Middle Archway (Judge Haley Drive) entrances to the Civic Center.
Many voters are unaware that if a person has moved or changed their name, they need to reregister. Often residents skip this process and are surprised when they do not receive a ballot.
Aside from being a state leader in voter turnout, Marin County also has a registration rate of approximately 94%. According to data provided by the California Secretary of State’s Office, though, there are nearly 20,000 Marin residents who are eligible to vote but not registered.
October 21 is the last day to register to vote in the November 5 General Election and receive a mailed ballot. To register to vote or check your voter registration, visit RegisterToVote.ca.gov.
National Voter Registration Day is part of the Elections Department’s public outreach and education efforts every year, and this marks the third year in a row the Civic Center has hosted the festivities. Music, snacks, giveaways, and an interactive selfie station are all planned for this year’s event.
“National Voter Registration Day is gaining momentum nationally,” Registrar of Voters Lynda Roberts said. “Even though registration is already high in Marin County, it’s important we take advantage of this momentum. Marin County always has one of the highest voter turnouts in the state, and we intend to keep it that way.”
