Strengthening transparency and community collaboration in Sheriff's Office oversight

Overview

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) conducts independent oversight of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office by establishing a community complaint process, reviewing and analyzing Sheriff's Office policies, procedures, and practices, reviewing investigations, conducting community outreach and education, analyzing data, and issuing public reports with findings and recommendations.

The Office of the Inspector General works collaboratively with the Civilian Oversight Commission, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, and the community to support effective oversight. This includes coordinating on the complaint process, engaging in ongoing community outreach, sharing information consistent with the operational agreement and the law, and working to review practices and develop recommendations that improve transparency, accountability, and public trust.

John Alden Selected as Marin County’s First Inspector General -  John Alden has been selected as Marin County’s first Inspector General, a newly established role that will provide independent oversight of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Civilian Oversight Commission.
