Inactive voters

Information about becoming an inactive voter and how to be made active.

Overview

Voters on the inactive list are still registered in Marin County.  However, the voter will not receive election mail (ballot, voter information guide, and sample ballot).

How voters are made inactive

Voters become inactive if:

  • The voter does not vote in two consecutive General Elections (which take place in November of even numbered years).
  • We receive notification from a third-party (such as the DMV or USPS) that the voter has moved out of the county.
  • Election material, mailed to the voter, is returned as undeliverable. Election mail is not forwarded.

Before we move a voter to the inactive list, the voter is sent a notice that their name will be placed on the inactive voter list unless they reply to the notice.

How to become an active voter

If the voter has no changes to their registration:

  • They can re-register online.
  • They can call us, 415-473-6456, and verify that their information is correct (including mailing address change).
  • They can vote a provisional ballot at any vote center in Marin County. See our List of Vote Centers for the full list of days and hours of operation.
