RE: Letter of Support for the Ferry Landing Construction Project
Dear Administrator Fernandez,
On behalf of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, I write to request that you give full and fair consideration to the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District’s (District) $6 million request in federal funds for the Ferry Landing Construction Project (Project). The $6 million requested will fully fund the “shovel ready” $22.5 million dollar project, which includes $4.5 million from Golden Gate Bridge toll revenues (20% local match).
The Project will modify the Golden Gate Ferry (Ferry) passenger boarding system, which has reached the end of its useful life, at the Sausalito ferry terminal and landing located in Marin County, California. The Project will support the District’s efforts to maintain the Ferry system in a state of good repair. The Project will also provide efficient and reliable ferry service to the over 8,000 daily riders, while improving passenger and employee safety, system security and ADA compliance.
The District’s Sausalito terminal plays a critical role in bolstering the economic vitality of the region by connecting riders to the greater transit network, cities further north, and San Francisco via Golden Gate Transit bus service. At its full-service level, the Ferry operates 18 daily weekday crossings to and from the San Francisco Ferry Terminal Building and 12 daily crossings on weekends and holidays. The San Francisco Ferry Terminal, located in the heart of San Francisco’s Embarcadero neighborhood, is within walking distance of 300,000 jobs and has intermodal connections to BART, MUNI, Caltrain, and other transit systems at the nearby Transbay Transit Center, which provides riders with connections to other regions of the San Francisco Bay Area.
We believe the District’s request for $6 million in federal funds will assure the continued success of its ferry system, maintain critical assets in a state of good repair, and support the economic vitality of the region. We strongly urge that the Project be favorably considered. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions about our position.
Respectfully,
Stephanie Moulton-Peters, President
Marin County Board of Supervisors
