Dear Representative Huffman,
On behalf of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, I write in support of the $1 million Community Project funding request for the Agricultural Institute of Marin’s new Center for Food and Agriculture (CFA), a zero-waste farmers market and educational center at the historic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Marin Civic Center. The CFA will be one of the world’s first closed-loop, zero-waste farmers markets targeting no on-site greenhouse gas emissions.
The CFA will be an open-air year-round farmers market with daily programming. The facility would include accessible restrooms, hydration stations, and full set-ups for market tents. The CFA is also designed to include indoor and outdoor dynamic learning spaces, including a teaching kitchen, classrooms and meeting spaces, and edible gardens. Other features include permeable paving and habitat restoration to sequester pollutants and filter water, on-site composting and carbon sequestration gardens, pollinator corridor for essential life-giving insects and birds, and rainwater cistern for on-site irrigation. The new Center will be fully electric with on-site solar panels, allowing energy storage and reserve during emergencies. The project is also designed specifically to serve historically disadvantaged producers and consumers.
MarinCAN, a community-driven campaign to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, prepare for climate change impacts, and meaningfully address and integrate equity, has endorsed the CFA as one of seven solutions for reducing greenhouse gases in Marin.
Sincerely.
Stephanie Moulton-Peters, President
Marin County Board of Supervisors
