Dear Congressman Huffman,
On behalf of the Marin County Board of Supervisors, I write to support Vivalon’s request for $1,000,000 to help complete the construction of their Healthy Aging Campus in central San Rafael.
Vivalon (formerly Whistlestop) is a nonprofit organization in San Rafael that has been serving Marin County's older adults and people with disabilities for more than 69 years. Vivalon's mission is to advance independence, health and quality of life for older adults and people with disabilities and offers transportation, meals (including Meals on Wheels), healthy aging classes, technology programs, and social engagement opportunities.
The Health Aging Campus is a new model of healthy aging and supports the residential, social and medical needs of older adults. In addition, the campus provides affordable homes for older adults at a central, community-based location in the heart of San Rafael. Sixty-six residential units will be Section-8 low-income apartments. The highly-collaborative project addresses the focus areas of the State of California Master Plan on Aging, and the project is very supported by the County’s Health and Human Services Department.
The project was supported with $11.9 million from area donors and foundations. Eden Housing has secured the funding for the affordable housing portion from funders including the City of San Rafael. Construction commenced on the project in Spring 2022 with the opening expected in early 2024. However, materials, labor cost increases and enhancements to the project have required Vivalon to raise another $3,100,000 to complete the interior of the Healthy Aging Center.
Our Board supports Vivalon's $1,000,000 request for 2024 Community Project Funding to help meet this funding gap.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Moulton-Peters, President
Marin County Board of Supervisors
