Need to know
Don't have a dedicated garage for electric vehicle (EV) charging? There are multiple options available to you.
Before you start
Getting EV charging installed at your building doesn't have to be a complicated process, but it does require some initial planning.
What to do
1. Learn as much as you can
Find out how many residents in your building own an EV or have interest purchasing one. You can create a simple survey to learn this information. Research the process for installing charging and the steps your property manager would need to follow to make your case.
Cost Recovery: Find ways for your property manager to recover costs from charging, so they see the investment's benefit.
Incentives: MCE Clean Energy offers rebates to customers for multifamily properties. There are also federal tax incentives for some commercial charging installation projects. PG&E offers no-cost installation for multifamily housing sites, not-for-profit organizations, and small businesses. Explore options to present to your property manager.
2. Gather support
Talk to your neighbors who also own EVs or have interest in EV ownership to support your case for installing charging.
3. Engage your property manager
Once you have the information you need, it’s time to chat with your property manager. Below are a few helpful talking points to guide our discussion:
