Marin County Fire only issues permits for properties located within its jurisdiction. Please use the interactive map to confirm that your project falls under our jurisdiction. Enter your address in the map tool to identify your fire authority.
This application form is for permits issued by the Marin County Fire Department. For information about general building or planning permits, please visit the Building and Safety Division.
We issue permits for projects including:
- Bonfires or rubbish fires
- Repair Garages
- Hot work
- Dust producing operations
- Spray operations
- Fireworks public display
- High-piled combustible stock
- Tents and air supported structures
- Flammable or combustible liquids
- Ministerial permits
- Candles or open flames in assembly areas
- Burning in public place
- Places of assembly
- Special events/public events
- Liquid petroleum gas (LPG) storage tanks
- State Fire Marshal (SFM) facilities
Our permit fees vary, depending on the type and size of your project. The fees are:
- Residential fire sprinkler system: $411.00
- Vegetation management plan (VMP) for a single-family dwelling: $411.00
- VMP for a subdivision with 2-5 residences: $615.00
- VMP for a subdivision with 6-15 residences: $1,641.00
- VMP for a subdivision with 16 or more residences: $2,052.00
- Wildland Urban Interface Fire Protection Plan: $411.00
- Fire alarm/detection systems: $411.00
- Pre-engineered systems: $411.00
- California Fire Code permit: $342.00
- Commercial fire sprinkler system (with overhead piping and 31 or more heads): $615.00
- Commercial fire sprinkler system (underground): $410.00
- Ministerial permits: $342.00
- Commercial T.I. (1-10 heads): $342.00
- Commercial T.I. (11-30 heads): $411.00
- SFM Facility (25 or less): $50.00
- SFM Facility (26 or more): $100.00
- Photovoltaic systems (commercial): $411.00
What to do
- Complete the application form. You’ll need to tell us about:
- Your project information, like the address and your contractor’s license number.
- What type of project you’re applying for. We issue permits for projects like installing sprinkler systems or fire alarms, and for public events like fireworks displays.
- Pay the permit fee. Our permit fees vary, depending on the type and size of your project. You will be charged for the actual time spent to the nearest ¼ hour, at a rate of $177.00 per hour. You have the option to pay with a check or a credit card. To pay with a card, please use the Fire Permit Fees form or call us at 415-473-2125. You can also mail a check to: Marin County Fire Department, 1600 Los Gamos Dr., Suite 300, San Rafael, CA 94903.
What's next
Our staff will review permit applications within 5 business days. After we have reviewed your form, you’ll receive an acknowledgement. We will let you know if we need more information.
If your form is complete, we’ll send you a list of conditions you’ll need to meet and inspections you’ll need to have before we issue your permit. Once your application is complete, we will give you a job reference number. Keep this number for your records.
