Body of News Release
Marin County, CA – Marin County is observing Latin American Heritage Month with a full slate of events that honors the Latin histories, cultures, and contributions that enrich the county’s civic life, arts, leadership, and traditions.
The Marin County Board of Supervisors is expected to adopt a resolution at the start of its September 30 meeting to celebrate September 15 to October 15 as Latin American Heritage Month. Shortly after convening at 9 AM, the Board’s resolution will be presented in English, Spanish, and Portuguese, and accompanied by cultural ceremonies. Community Latino leaders have been invited to join the event, further underscoring the unity and vitality of Marin’s Latin community.
The Board’s resolution honors the strength and resilience of Marin’s Latin American community, which has overcome longstanding barriers and inequities while continuing to sustain agriculture, create cultural traditions, and enrich the county as a whole. With roots across North, Central, and South America and the Caribbean, Marin’s Latin American community is vibrant, diverse, and deeply woven into the fabric of local life. This month also recognizes the richness of identities within the community, including Afro-Latinos, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ+ individuals, and multigenerational families whose lived experiences continue to shape Marin’s shared story.
The Board meeting will be livestreamed on the County website and shown on Channel 27 for Marin’s Comcast and AT&T U-Verse subscribers. In addition to the Board presentation, there are other vibrant events and cultural experiences planned, including:
- Multicultural Marin: Art Exhibition at Civic Center Galleries – Opening October 2 and running through January 23, the exhibition highlights Latin American creativity and cultural expression.
- Fiesta de las Américas – On Tuesday, October 7, the Civic Center Cafeteria will transform into a lively cultural fair. Guests can enjoy food, music, and displays from across Latin America, collect stamps in a “passport,” and enter a raffle. The event will also include a Latin American Fashion Show, open to all participants. The cafeteria is in Suite 237 of the Civic Center (3501 Civic Center Drive, San Rafael).
- Additional programming through the Marin County Free Library and its 10 branches.
The Supervisors plan to acknowledge and thank members of the Marin County Organization of Latino Employees and Indigenous Tribal Descendants (MCOLE), Multicultural Marin, and everyone working to elevate the quality of life of Latinos and Latinas who call Marin their home, school community, or workplace.
The County’s Office of Equity, part of the Office of the County Executive, continues to partner with communities to address systemic barriers, honor cultural celebration, and uplift the voices of underrepresented groups. Through collaboration, listening, and co-creation with residents, the Equity Division works to ensure that County policies and programs meet the needs of all communities.
