Body of News Release
Marin County, CA – The County of Marin has opened recruitment for two upcoming new terms on the Civilian Oversight Commission of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office. Applications will be accepted through May 24.
The available seats represent Supervisorial Districts 1 and 4 and are open to residents who live in those districts. The Marin County Board of Supervisors is expected to make appointments this summer, with new terms beginning August 1. Each appointment carries a three-year term.
The Commission is a nine-member, community-led body established to conduct independent oversight of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust.
The Board of Supervisors aims to appoint commissioners who broadly reflect the diversity of Marin County. This includes representation across ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, economic status, age, religion, citizenship status, housing status, and lived experience with the criminal justice system. The Board also considers interest or experience in areas such as civil rights, immigrant rights, disability and mental health, racial equity, social justice, and public safety.
Community members with a demonstrated interest in public service or experience serving their communities are encouraged to apply. Community members who have never served on a County Board or Commission are encouraged to apply.
Since its formation in August 2025, the Commission has focused on foundational work to establish independent, transparent, and effective civilian oversight in Marin County. The Commission has developed its governance structure and key policies and procedures, positioning it to transition into its next phase of work. This will include, in collaboration with the Office of the Inspector General, reviewing policies and completed investigations, supporting the development of an independent complaint process, conducting community outreach, and issuing public reports.
The recruitment process is administered by the Clerk of the Board, which posts vacancies, receives applications, and coordinates the appointment process.
The application period is open through May 24. After the deadline, applications will be reviewed for eligibility and forwarded to the Board of Supervisors for consideration, with review and final appointments expected to take place in the summer at a public Board meeting.
