Body of News Release

Marin County, CA – The County of Marin’s budget staff continues to keep a steadfast eye on dynamic economic conditions at the local, regional, state, and national levels. The information helps guide the County as it begins work on its next two-year budget and as referred to as the financial plan for 2026-28.

The Marin County Board of Supervisors will hold its annual budget workshops February 23-25 at Marin Center’s Showcase Theater to review a draft workplan for all County departments and discuss budget work program priorities. After the February workshops, the County budget staff will take feedback from the Board and the public, work with the County’s 22 departments, and develop a proposed final budget and work program for Board review by early June.

The February workshops give the public a chance to learn about the County’s financial outlook and key budget initiatives, and to share input before key budget decisions are made. During the three-day session, the Board of Supervisors will hear presentations on major topics, including:

  • County workplan updates on Board priorities such as affordable housing, homelessness prevention, race equity, infrastructure, economic vitality, disaster preparedness, and climate resiliency.
  • Implementation planning for the Community Development Agency and the Department of Public Works following their recent third-party organizational assessments.
  • Federal and state policy changes that will affect how the County provides critical safety-net services.
  • Local, regional and statewide economic trends that have the potential to impact county residents.

“As in prior years, the County remains committed to providing a budget workshop which seeks to have an open and productive discussion about the critical services that we provide to the community,” said Josh Swedberg, the County’s Budget Director and Interim Assistant County Executive. “While the economy continues to show more turbulance, we remain focused on providing a budget that addresses the Board’s top priorities and provides critical services in a manner which is fiscally sustainable.”

On May 16, 2025, the Board approved a $865.8 million budget for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. That budget represented a 6% increase over the previous year and included $10.4 million for one-time investments and pilot initiatives with community-identified priorities. The approved budget reflected the County’s commitment to democracy, diversity, equity, and inclusion – a pledge displayed in a January 2025 Board resolution

The budget workshops will take place at Marin Center’s Showcase Theater, the temporary home of the Supervisors’ meetings during an audio-video upgrade of the Board chamber inside the Marin County Civic Center. A schedule for the workshops is expected to be available online during the week of February 16-20. The workshop sessions will be live-streamed and available for viewing on Comcast Channel 27 or AT&T Channel 99. Participation details, budget materials, and interactive tools can be accessed on the County’s budget webpage.

Feedback about budget priorities may be emailed to the budget staff.
