Body of News Release
Marin County, CA – Staff members from the County of Marin are planning on attending two meetings in April to introduce a new study that looks at the future of the Tam Junction and Manzanita areas in unincorporated southern Marin.
Staff is seeking public comment to determine community priorities around issues like community vitality, safety, access and resiliency for the study area to draft a community-driven request for proposals from qualified consultants. A robust public engagement effort, including several community meetings, surveys, and the formation of an advisory group, will begin once a consultant has been chosen this fall.
Staff from the Community Development Agency (CDA) will introduce its Tam Junction Placemaking Study at the following April meetings:
- Wednesday, April 1, 7 PM, Tam Valley Community Center, 203 Marin Avenue, Mill Valley
- Wednesday, April 15, 7PM, Tam Valley Community Center
The interdisciplinary project team will conduct a collaborative and hands on community engagement effort to research, assess feedback from the residents and business owners, and publish a report on the findings to ensure a thriving, vibrant, and sustainable Tam Junction.
Tamalpais Valley includes the unincorporated neighborhoods between Marin City to the south and the City of Mill Valley to the north. It includes Tennessee Valley, Homestead Valley, Tam Junction, Almonte, and streets off Panoramic Highway on the eastern slope of Mount Tamalpais. The key business district in the area, which is the focus of this project, is Tam Junction and Manzanita areas, a half-mile stretch of Shoreline Highway between Almonte Boulevard and Highway 101.
Tam Junction and Manzanita are evolving as an active, vibrant local and regional hub. The area is challenged by traffic congestion from local residents and businesses as well as from visitors traveling through the area to coastal West Marin, Mount Tamalpais State Park, and Muir Woods National Monument. Also, both waterfront areas on the west side of Richardson Bay are often inundated with winter storm surges, king tides, and longer-term sea level rise.
Anyone may sign up to receive emailed updates on the project or send an email to CDA staff.
