Special Operations

We respond to many different types of emergencies.

What we do

In addition to fighting fires, we respond to all-hazard incidents. This means our teams are ready to respond in many different types of emergencies.

Our rescue teams

Water Rescue

Our water rescue team can respond to emergencies in different situations, including:

  • During flooding;
  • In swiftwater, lake, and ocean environments.

We are a state funded team, so we receive support from CalEMA. We’re ready to respond to emergencies in Marin and across the state. Our water rescue team is classified as a Type I Swiftwater/Flood Search and Rescue Team and is designated as CA SF S&R Team 11.

Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 1 (USAR RTF 1)

We work side-by-side with colleagues from the Department of Public Works, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office, and other fire agencies to respond during emergencies. During an emergency, we can use a variety of techniques and teams to find and help people, including:

  • Technology that allows us to scan an area and locate survivors;
  • Construction tools that help us enter buildings, shore up structures, and make rescues safer;
  • Canine teams and dog handlers;
  • Paramedics who can provide lifesaving support on-site.

Our Urban Search and Rescue team is also trained to respond to confined space incidents. This means we can help during emergencies in places like collapsed buildings, where people may become trapped in confined spaces.

Hazardous Material Response (HAZMAT)

Our team is trained to respond safely in the event of a hazardous material incident, like a chemical spill. In this kind of emergency, we can:

  • Evacuate anyone who has been injured;
  • Identify the hazardous material;
  • Help contain and remove any hazardous materials.
