Final construction inspection for permanent food facility

A final construction inspection is needed before you open. Learn what is needed to schedule the inspection.

Timing

  • At least 1 week before you want the inspection
  • At least 1 week before you plan to open
  • We receive numerous food facility plans and inspection requests. To ensure timely inspections, it's best to schedule them in advance, as your preferred date may not always be available.

Cost

Standard inspections are included in the plan review fee. However, if inspections exceed the allotted time, additional hourly fees may apply.

Before you contact us to schedule the final construction inspection, the following details must be met.

  • All work is 100% complete and your facility is ready to stock or serve food:
    • All equipment is installed, matches models shown on plans, and is working
    • All shelving is installed
    • Refrigeration is on, holding temperatures at 41°F or less (must have a cup of water in each cooler for us to measure temperature), and a thermometer placed in the warmest location
    • Hot water is at least 100°F at hand sinks and 120°F or greater at all other sinks
    • Dishwashers are working and have enough sanitizer
    • Everything is cleaned, sanitized, and construction debris has been removed
    • You do not have any food or beverages in the facility
  • You have already submitted:

If anything listed above is not complete, contact your inspector to reschedule the final.

Before the inspection, make sure to have the following on site:

  • Building "job card"
  • Approved plans

After the final construction inspection

  • A final inspection report will be provided.
  • Before you begin operating you must complete the health permit license application and pay the annual operating permit fees.
  • You will pay any overage fees for the plan review (our office will let you know if you owe these fees and how much you owe).
  • Your facility is now ready to stock or serve food.
  • You will get your Permit to Operate by mail.
  • You must receive approval from all other agencies:

If you don't pass the final inspection

Following the inspection, we'll provide a detailed report outlining necessary corrections before the final inspection. The plan review inspector may also recommend additional preliminary inspections. If so, they will specify the timing for these inspections. Refer to the food facility plan check process for more information.

What if I changed or added equipment or made other changes to my EHS approved plans?

You need to submit your revised plans to Environmental Health Services right away. If you wait, your final inspection may get delayed. Review how to make changes to approved plans for a food facility for details.
