Permanent food facility plan check

Learn what is needed to construct or remodel a food business in Marin County.

Are you buying an existing food business?

Did you know the previous owner’s health permit does not transfer to you? A change of ownership inspection is required before you take over and open.  The change of ownership inspection will provide valuable information about potential facility upgrades necessary for opening. We can also educate you on the specific requirements for operating a food business in Marin County.

What type of business needs to have a food plan review?

All food businesses need their plans reviewed and approved by our office. The approval process ensures that new or remodeled food establishments adhere to strict health and safety standards.

The definition of a food facility is a retail operation that stores, prepares, packages, serves, sells, or provides food or drinks for people to eat or drink. That includes restaurants, bars, markets, school cafeterias, warehouses, catering kitchens, limited food preparation businesses, and more.

Mobile food trucks, and compact mobile food operations also require plan review and must be constructed to specific standards before they are approved to be used. Please refer to our mobile food trucks, and compact mobile food operations pages for the plan check process for these types of businesses.

Plan review timing

Initially, plan review takes 20 business days after receiving a complete application and fee. Final approval usually takes 2 to 3 months. Obtaining all necessary permits, completing construction, and passing inspections can take 6 months or longer.

To avoid delaying the review process, please refrain from calling to inquire about the status of your plans unless it has been more than 20 business days. While we strive to process applications promptly, frequent calls and emails can hinder our review efforts.

Request a meeting or construction inspection

  • We are here to help. An optional pre-submittal meeting is available to have your submittal reviewed before applying.
  • Construction inspections need to be scheduled with your inspector at least one week before you need the inspection.
